Introduction
A Mineral and Construction Product Sampling and Testing Operator collects and samples mineral products, heavy construction products and/or final end use products to ensure they meet rigorous British and European standards (BSEN) and to ensure they meet customer specifications. Materials can include ready mixed concrete, cement, mortar, asphalt, road building and high-speed rail products, precast and pre-stressed concrete.
Occupational role
Mineral and Construction Product Sampling and Testing Operators work in a range of subsectors including mining, construction, quarrying, road building, waste and recycling operations. As product failure and poor quality can lead to end use failure, expert knowledge and attention to detail is essential. This is a key role supporting the entire production process.

End Point Assessment
Overview of assessment
The end point assessment covers all the skills, knowledge and behaviours in the Standard. It will take place using independent assessors appointed by QFI and the methods shown below:
Knowledge assessment
Consisting of 30 multiple-choice questions via an online platform. Duration 60 minutes. The knowledge assessment will take place before the observation with questions and the professional discussion.
Observation with questions
Consisting of a timed synoptic practical observation of the apprentice at work completing the daily tasks required by their employer as per their job description. Followed by a minimum of 6 questions based on the observation. Duration 90 minutes.
Professional discussion (supported by portfolio of evidence)
Conducted on a 1:1 basis between the apprentice and the assessor. The assessor will ask a minimum of 10 open questions covering underpinning knowledge, skills and behaviours, informed by their review of the apprentices portfolio of evidence. Duration 60 minutes.
Readiness for assessment
The employer will endorse progression to the end point when satisfied that the apprentice is consistently working at or above the level set out in the standard, and the pre-requisite gateway requirements have been met with evidence to support these:
1. achieved minimum Level 1 English and mathematics and taken the tests for Level 2
2. completed the MPQC Level 2 Certificate in Laboratory and Associated Technical Activities for Mineral Products Operations
3. submitted a Portfolio of Evidence (to support the Professional Discussion)
Grading
This apprenticeship is graded by the independent assessor appointed by QFI and grades are either: Fail, Pass or Distinction.
