Introduction

Town Planning Assistants may work in local authorities, small consultancies, large multi-disciplinary consultancies, central government or other organisations undertaking planning work.

Occupational role

The broad purpose of the occupation is to work with and provide technical and administrative support to Chartered Town Planners to deliver new developments and to shape and create sustainable places for the benefit of the public. They also help members of the public and/or clients to navigate the planning system and explain its rules and requirements.

Content

The apprenticeship includes the skills, technical knowledge, and behaviours required to undertake the work of a Town Planning Assistant.

 

End Point Assessment

Overview of assessment

The end point assessment covers all the skills, knowledge and behaviours in the Standard. It will take place using independent assessors appointed by QFI and the methods shown below:

Knowledge test

Consisting of a 20 multiple-choice knowledge and scenario based questions. Conducted via an online platform under controlled conditions. Duration 60 minutes.

Professional discussion -underpinned by portfolio of evidence

The interview will be 2-way discussion between the apprentice and assessor and will be underpinned by the portfolio of evidence. Duration 60 minutes.

Project

The apprentice completes a 4,000 word project that has a real business benefit and can evidence the KSBs assigned to this assessment method. The title and scope of the project  are agreed with QFI at the Gateway stage.  

Readiness for assessment

The employer will endorse progression to the end point when satisfied that the apprentice is consistently working at or above the level set out in the standard, and the pre-requisite gateway requirements have been met with evidence to support these:

  1. achieved minimum level 2 English and mathematics
  2. submitted a Project title and scope for sign off to QFI
  3. submitted a Portfolio of Evidence to underpin professional discussion.

Grading

This apprenticeship is graded by the independent assessor appointed by QFI and grades are either: Fail, Pass or Distinction.

Professional Recognition

This standard aligns with the following professional recognition:

  • upon successful completion of the apprenticeship standard and following a period of relevant experience, an application for Associate membership of the RTPI can be made.
